Scholarships in Austria

Austria’s scholarships for international students are managed by the OeAD, Austria’s agency for education and international cooperation. Unlike some countries, Austria offers few scholarships that fund a full degree. Most OeAD grants pay for research stays and shorter study periods.

Main Options
Ernst Mach Grant (Worldwide)
Funds a research stay at an Austrian university. It pays EUR 1,300 a month. It is open to doctoral students, recent master’s graduates and early-career researchers under 35. It does not fund a full degree. Read the Ernst Mach Grant guide.

Who Should Look Elsewhere
If you want a fully funded bachelor’s or master’s degree, Austria is not the strongest choice. Look at Hungary or Sweden instead. Austria makes most sense if you are already doing research and want time at an Austrian university.

Common Questions
Can I study a full master’s in Austria on the Ernst Mach Grant?
No. It funds a research stay, not a degree programme.
Where do I find all Austrian scholarships?
The OeAD runs a scholarship database on its official website, listing every grant open to international students.
